Subject: DeAndre Hopkins trade rumors Bills Josh Allen Ravens Lamar J
Quote
Trade rumors have been swirling around DeAndre Hopkins for most of the 2023 NFL offseason. The veteran wide-out hasn't been dealt away from the Cardinals yet. He . But based on some of his recent comments, it seems like he wouldn't mind a chance to get a fresh start. Hopkins appeared Marwin Gonzalez Jersey on the "I AM ATHLETE" podcast Monday and was asked about a potential split with the Cardinals. He made it clear thathe isn't holding a grudge against Arizona, nor is he trying to hold out for a larger contract. And again, he might not even leave the team. But still, the soon-to-be 31-year-old is just looking for stability as he progre ses into the latter stages of his career. "What I want is stable management upstairs," Hopkins said on the podcast. "I think that's something that I haven't really had the past couple years of my career coming from Houston to being in Arizona; I've been through three to four GMs in my career." MORE: The Cardinals have undergone significant changes during the 2023 NFL offseason, with both head coach Kliff Kingsbury and general manager Steve Keim being fired after a disappointing 2022 campaign. Jonathan Gannon and Monti O senfort were brought in to help right the ship, and while each has high-level experience with NFL teams, neither is proven. As such, it's sensible that Hopkins may want a change of scenery. That's especially true considering that Arizona is staring down a multi-year rebuild and is arguably lacking the three key qualities that the receiver looks for in a team. "For me, that's it: great management, a QB who loves the game and a great defense," he explained. "A QB who loves the game, a QB who brings everybody on board with him, pushes not just himself but people around him," he added. "I don't need a great QB I've done it with subpar QBs just a QB who loves the game like I do. And a great defense. I think defense wins championships." The Cardinals' defense has been in regre sion since it peaked during their undefeated start to the 2021 campaign. The unit has lost Chandler Jones, J.J. Watt and Byron Murphy, among others, since that season, so it will be hard to replace all of them in 2023. Meanwhile, Kyler Murray is certainly a talented quarterback, but one question about him has been his work ethic. The Cardinals originally that required him to put in multiple hours of his own work into film study each week to justify the $230.5 million extension. MORE: Josh Reddick Jersey ; Eventually, after uproar surrounded it. Still, the whole situation showed the uncertainty surrounding Murray's willingne s to push himself, which would be a strike against him based on Hopkins' comments. So, where would Hopkins like to land if he doesn't stay with the Cardinals? For him, the decision could be tied to quarterback play. He was asked to name five pa sers he would like to play with in the NFL. That produced a list of potential landing spots for the veteran receiver. Unsurprisingly, most on the list were contenders who could use another veteran pa s-catcher to improve their Super Bowl odds. Buffalo Bills The first quarterback listed by Hopkins was Josh Allen. He revealed that he has been watching Allen since he entered the league and is a big fan of the 27-year-old quarterback. "He reminds me of a new-school Andrew Luck," Hopkins said of Allen. The Bills signed Trent Sherfield and Deonte Harty during the 2023 offseason but could use a more proven third receiver to join Stefon Diggs and Gabriel Davis as Allen's top weapons. Hopkins would be a great pickup for a contending Buffalo team and would provide them some insurance against losing Davis when he hits free agency in the 2024 offseason. Philadelphia Eagles Jalen Hurts was the second quarterback mentioned by Hopkins as one with whom he would like to work. He noted that both he and Hurts have ties to the Houston area, Hurts via his childhood and Hopkins via his time with the Texans. The Eagles have arguably the best receiver tandem in the NFL in A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. However, like the Bills, they could use a third receiver to pair with that duo if free-agent acquisition Olamide Zaccheaus isn't the answer. (Getty Images) Kansas City Chiefs Naturally, Hopkins mentioned Patrick Mahomes as part of this segment in the podcast. In fact, the only surprise about this was that he didn't Nolan Ryan Jersey mention Mahomes sooner than No. 3 overall. The Chiefs might be Hopkins' best fit among the contending teams, as they don't have many proven players at the receiver position. Kadarius Toney is expected to be their top wide-out in 2023 with JuJu Smith-Schuster having signed with the Patriots while recent second-round picks Skyy Moore and Rashee Rice will have a chance to make an impact as well. Still, none have the same rsum and pedigree as Hopkins, who could start next to Toney and Marquez Valdes-Scantling until Moore and Rice are ready for larger roles. Either way, he would provide the team with extra depth and experience at receiver, and he could feast if paired with Mahomes. MORE: Baltimore Ravens Hopkins' fourth choice on the quarterback list was Lamar Jackson. He explained that he is a believer in the 2019 MVP's ability as a pa ser as the reason that he would like to join the Ravens. &# Dallas Keuchel Jersey 13;"I gotta go with the underdog," Hopkins said of Jackson. "Not a lot of people respect this guy as a throwing quarterback." Baltimore has undergone a full retool at receiver this offseason. The team signed Odell Beckham Jr. to a one-year contract and spent a first-round pick on Boston College's Zay Flowers to give Jackson some more weapons. Rashod Bateman, a first-round pick in 2020, is still on the team as well, so they have three solid receivers. Even so, Beckham and Bateman have checkered injury histories, so the Ravens might like to acquire Hopkins to improve their depth. That would allow them to ease Flowers into action and protect them in case one of their veteran receivers suffers and injury. If the Ravens did pursue Hopkins via trade, it would be a somewhat ironic twist, as they traded their top receiver Marquise Brown to the Cardinals during the 2022 NFL Draft. But given Baltimore's approach to rebuilding the receiver room this offseason, trading for Hopkins can't be ruled out. Deandre Hopkins on his TOP 5 Quarterbacks he wants the ball thrown to him from 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) I AM ATHLETE (@IAMATHLETEpod) Los Angeles Chargers &# Gerrit Cole Jersey 13;Hopkins spent a while contemplating his No. 5 quarterback option but eventually settled on Justin Herbert as his favorite among the remaining pa sers in the NFL. He didn't say a lot about Herbert's skill set or even his name; he just said "my dude with San Diego... or the Chargers." but he revealed that he wants to play with an established quarterback and not any of the rookies coming into the NFL. Hopkins might be a fan of Herbert, but the two teaming up with the Chargers seems unlikely. The Chargers have two established veteran receivers on the roster in Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, Josh Palmer a 2021 third-round pick who performed well when Williams was out last season and Quentin Johnston, a first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, at the position. That receiver depth chart is solid and crowded, so it would probably be hard to fit Hopkins into it as well. As such, Hopkins' chances of working with the likes of Allen, Hurts, Mahomes or Jackson seem higher than his chances of working with Herbert.
